What is a solar thermal system?
A solar thermal system is a system that can transform energy radiated by the sun into thermal energy, hence heat, which can be used for daily needs, such as heating water for services or space heating. Two types of solar thermal systems are usually distinguished: natural circulation or forced circulation. In the natural circulation system, as the solar liquid heats up, it rises to the tank located above the collector. When it loses heat, the liquid becomes heavier and naturally descends into the panel circuit for a new cycle. This system does not require pumps and thus incurs less expense. In the forced circulation system, the solar liquid circulates inside the panel by means of a booster pump. Therefore, it is not necessary to arrange the tank above the collector. The system is more efficient because a control unit regulates the solar liquid flows by precisely and optimally activating the exchange process between the collector and the tank.
What are the advantages of a solar thermal system?
The installation of a solar thermal system has several economic and environmental advantages. By harnessing solar energy, there is a high yield in the warmer months of the year, saving considerably on the utility bill since the boiler hardly ever comes into operation; moreover, in the cold months, although the yield of the solar panels is lower, they continue to work, so even in this case the boiler works much less since the water to be heated is never cold; therefore, there is a great energy saving and at the same time the useful life of the boiler is preserved.
